BIO: Amy Christine Spingola (b. 1988) is an abstract expressionist painter living and working in metro Atlanta. As an abstract expressionist, she paints what she feels rather than what she sees. Taking cues from the greats such as Basquiat and Frankenthaler, Amy works mostly in oil paint and mixed media. Growing up, Amy always had an affinity for creating and being creative in everyday life. Her interest in the arts reached far past the classroom, so she felt compelled to continue her artistic journey in college.
ARTIST STATEMENT: In the wake of the 2011 Tuscaloosa–Birmingham tornado, Amy earned her degree from The University of Alabama and faced 'Death' for the first time. Comprehending the fragility of life is a different journey for everyone. Amy chose to cope and ponder unanswered questions through the process of creating. Fascinated with the push and pull of nature & technology, she juxtaposes things like dried flowers & antique clock parts as texture.
DESCRIPTION OF WORK: Amy's current body of work explores the time: space relationship. Throughout the pandemic, she took to researching concepts like portals, time travel, and multiple dimensions beyond our visible reality. It is also important to note that music and film have greatly influenced the ebb and flow of her craft. Preferring to paint while listening to music, from Broadway to the Grateful Dead, the music never stops, giving a tangible movement to all her paintings. It’s also common for an old film to be looping on another device, in the background. Line work and gestures indicating films being played backwards, can be found throughout her work, illustrating her obsession with replaying film and music from a young age, when VHS Tapes and Cassette Tapes needed to be physically re-winded. Amy uses these vehicles as her own way to time travel, embedding the feelings that surface, into the layers of her paintings, in an ultimate attempt to better understand the essence of human emotion.
